The Create CommUNITY Initiative is a broad-based collaborative of many community organizations drawing together to work on reducing racism in our community.  The mission of Create CommUNITY is to provide a welcoming, non-discriminatory environment with respect and opportunity for all.

Sections of the community have collaborated on projects to enhance diversity and build racial harmony.  They include volunteers from Business, Education, Faith Communities, Government, Health Care, and Human Services.  Create CommUNITY addresses racism in the St. Cloud area by conducting focus groups and getting input and volunteers from a cross-section of community residents.

  • Over 150 volunteers are actively engaged across major sectors of our community
  • Over 10,000 participated in activities over the last 2 years
  • Established a cultural center
  • Made available an accessible advanced English as a Second Language course
  • Created dialogue groups for the business community on diversity in their workforce
  • Provided cultural diversity training for over 400 community citizens

 Progress-to-Date
  • Since January 2003, the community has raised over $115,342 locally to begin the Create CommUNITY Initiative, which shows the depth of the support in our community.
  • In November of 2004, a grant of $65,000 was received from the Otto Bremer Foundation to assist with the Initiative.  The grant funds were used for funding projects in the community that addressed diversity and encouraged multiple groups to collaborate.
  • About $30,000 was set aside to fund exploration of a Regional Human Rights office and a coordinator position. A coordinator was hired for the position in December 2005.

The Create CommUNITY is actively promoting programs that help encourage diversity in Central Minnesota. Interested in learning more? Contact contact Hedy Tripp, Coordinator at hedytripp@charter.net or call (320)654-8873 (h/o).
